We had such a busy week last week, and I (Cate) had planned to blog about each thing that we did. But time has gotten away from me because we are having ANOTHER very busy week, so here's a run down of what's been going on.
4/11/10 - We drove up to Durham for our monthly NC Songwriters Co-op Board Meeting. We were all so excited about what we have planned that the meeting went an extra half hour. We are so grateful to have such committed and enthusiastic board members who are always thinking of ways to serve our membership better. We've got lots of amazing things in the works, especially for the Fall, so I can't wait to share those with you guys when they are finalized.
4/13/10 - Today was our monthly local chapter meeting of the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI). We were happy to reconnect with all of our songwriting friends, and hear several great tunes during the critique session. The focus of tonight's meeting was BRIDGES. We dissected several country hits to see how many of them had bridges, and how they were used. I was surprised that the majority of the top ten hits on the country chart this week (American Honey, Highway 20 Ride, The Man I Want to Be, Keep On Lovin You, Ain't Back Yet, etc...) didn't have bridges. Very interesting!
4/14/10 - I spent the entire day GEEKING OUT at a workshop sponsored by our local Arts & Science Council (ASC). For the past couple of years, our ASC has brought in speakers from the National Arts Marketing Project. These marketing specialists exclusively deal with individual artists and arts organizations, so they can teach marketing in this specific way. I learned so much, and am disappointed that I haven't had time to retype all of my notes from the day. It was so much to take in, and I'm sure several of my future posts will include information from this all day event. My two speakers were Jaki Levy from Arrowroot Media and Ron Evans from Group of Minds. If any of our fellow artists are interested in learning how to specifically market as an artist, both of these guys are a wealth of information.
4/15/10 - We had an all day meeting for our day job, but the only reason I am including this day is because we spent time networking for our MUSIC job. John spoke with several people at the conference, and one of our former associates asked him to come on board and do some freelance web work for his company. This is EXACTLY what we are looking for because we need some supplemental income that can be done from home (or the road) while we are transitioning from our day jobs into music. Very cool day!
4/16/10 - Another all day conference for our day job, but the great part of the day was that we got to go to the Tosco Music Party that night. We were invited to see the show from backstage and had so much fun hanging out with our fellow artists. The Tosco Music Party is one of the premier music events in the Southeast, and John Tosco and the crew ALWAYS put on a spectacular show. We were so impressed to see everything that goes on behind the scenes to make this huge show come together. There were so many amazing performers, but some of our personal favorites were Livingston Taylor (Brother of James Taylor), Kinobe & Soul Beat Africa, Songs of Water, Sloan Wainwright, Valorie Miller (2nd place winner of the 2009 NC Songwriters Co-op songwriting contest), and Every Mother's Dream.
